HAWTHORNES HANDSOME START.

The Hawthorne track was opened yesterday
in a glowing way. A big crowd was out. The
ring had twenty-five books within it and the
racing was of high class and good to look upon.
Four favorites scored in Impromptu, Becky
Bolfe, Abe Frank and Louisville.

The other winners were Hermoso, 50 to 1. and
Knightbanneret, 3 to 1.

Hermoso, fresh and good, beat Bessie Macken
and Money Moss as they were tiring after a
long fight for the lead and had left an opening
at the rails for him to come through. His price
was a false one.

impromptu won the second event because he
outclassed his lot.

The Hooe pair— Frond and Becky Rolfe — ran
one two in the short course handicap. Frond
being pulled to let the Tristan mare win after
she had disposed of Sallust.

The fourth race got together a choice band of
two-year-olds, the odds on favorites, Georgs C.
Bennett’s pair Abe Frank and Ed Austin land-
ing one, two. The Schorr colt Eddie Busch
and Pat Dunne’s J. V. Kirby, both ran impress-
ive races behind the Bsnnett cracks.

Louisville landed the mile handicap fifth on
the card, Ohuet running a bad race. The clos-
ing event, a mile and a quarter selling,
fell to the third choice, Knightbanneret, the
best horse as the race was run.

Mr. Holtman’s starting was excellent and
the handsome track looked its best.

NOTES OF THE TURF.

Sam Howard’s entry will be refused at Haw-
thorne hereafter until he has been thoroughly
schooled at the barrier.

Trainer Hill announced at Gravesend yester-
day that Banastar’s injnries are such as will
cause him to be permanently retired.

J, P. M., Chicago. Brutal has never started
over a Chicago track. His running has all been
done in California.

After his winning race yesterday Himself
was “boosted” by W. C. Daly and bought ny
him for $2, .500.

CHICAGO, ILL., MAY 28, 1901.

HAWTHORNE'S HAND80.VIE START.

The Hawthorne track was opened yesterday
In a glowing way. A big crowd was out. The
ring had twenty-five books within it and the
raeing was of high class and good to look npon.
Four favorites scored in Impromptu, Becky
Bolfn, Aba FfiuiIi and LonieviUe.

i Tbe other winners were Hermoso, 50 to 1, and
^ Knigbtbanneret, 3 to 1.

Hermoso, fresh and good, beat Bessie Macken
and Money Mnss as they were tiring after a
long fight for the lead and had left an opening
at the rails for him to come throngh. His price
was a false one.

I Impromptu won the second event becanae he
ontclassed his lot.

The Hooe pair — Frond and Becky Rolfe — ran
one two in the short course handicap, Frond
being palled to let the Tristan mare win after
she had disposed of Sallust.

The fourth race got together a choice band of
two-year-olds, the odds on favorites. George C.
Bennett’s pair Abe Frank and Ed Austin land-
ing one, two. The Schorr colt Eddie Busch
and Pat Dunne’s J. V. Kirby, both ran impress-
ive races behind the Bsuuett cracks.

Louisville landed the mile handicap fifth on
the card, Ohuet running a bad race. The clos-
ing event, a mile and a quarter selling,
fell to the third choice, Knightbaaneret, the
beet horse as the race was ran.

Mr. Holtman’s starting was excellent and
the handsome track looked its best.

NOTES OF THE TDRF.

Sam Howard’s entry will be refused at Haw-
thorne hereafter until he has been thoroughly
schooled at the barrier.

Trainer Hill annonnced at Gravesend yester-
day that Banastar’s injuries are such as will
cause him to be permanently retired.

J. P. M., Chicago. Brutal has never started
over a Chicago track. His running has all been
done in California.

After his winning race yesterday Himself
was “boosted” by W. C. Daly and bought oy
him for $2,500.

Winner— Ch. h, by Sir Modred- Fidelity.

Went to post at ^2:30. At post 4 miuuteH, Start good for all but Joe Martin, who was all tan-

f ;led up at barrier rise. Bessie Macken could not get her nose in front of Money Muss until the
ast eighth, where she got clear ana looked to be winning, but Meade brought Hermoso up on
the inside rail with a rush from the head of the stretch and he won ridden out and going away
on the end. Rathgar had a turn of speed for a little over five-eighths of a mile and then retired.
All things considered Algareta ran a fair race and was closing on the end. Wild Pirate, after
trailing hie field hopelessly out of it, picked it up one by one and closing almost fifteen lengths
ran an impressive race. Money Muss ran to his mark.

Scratched— (25087)The Rush, 115.

Impromptu was far the best aud had the best of the field all the way. Monos stopped badly

after leaving the half as did Bugaboo. It was the latter’s first start hereabouts and she should
improve on the race. Plead was cut off at the first turn and Timms had to pull to the outside.
His ride was ragged throughout, the midget finding many pockets. Geta Blackburn showed
well for five furlongs and then gave it up. Monos ran about his race.

Went to post at 3:3*5. At post 2 miuutes. Start good. Frond could have won off by herself,
but was palled up the last sixteenth to allow Becky Rolfe to win. It was s driving finish down
the stretch between Becky Rolfe and Sallust, but in ueariug the wire the latter gave it up. Lord
Chesterfield jumped well and was within hailing distance all the way. He will probably do next
time. Sam Howard bolted at the second hurdle, but was afterward galloped over the course.
Alice B. jumped well and was close up to near the final obstacle, where she cracked. The race
sbonld do her a lot of good and she may be looked upon to perform better at her next asking.

Brannigan is undoubtedly short and should be seen to better advantage at his next outing.
